Thanksgiving treat: tons of iPhone, iPad, iPod touch games on sale

Turkey Steve Jobs and iPhone. Apologies.
The kind and fantabulously generous Sir Awesome of Touch Arcade has compiled a huge list of games that have had their prices slashed this holiday season. If you're after more of a 'curated' list, with actual links to iTunes, they have a blog post up with their list of must-have discounted games.

Most games on the list seem to have undergone massive, more-than-50% discounts. Need for Speed Shift is down at 99 cents, as is NFL 2011. If I had an iOS device, I'd be able to pick out all of the cool games for you -- but I don't. So there.

Finally, take note that some games aren't yet on sale, but will go on sale sometime between now and 'Cyber Monday.' No big rush, though; it looks like everything is on sale until at least November 28!

Microsoft offers stability update for Internet Explorer 9 Beta

internet explorer 9 beta
Microsoft has offered up the first Internet Explorer 9 patch via Windows Update. KB2448827 is all about improving reliability and stability, and you should be able to find it on your Update screen by clicking through to view optional updates (or by navigating to Control Panel\System and Security\Windows Update\Select updates to install in Explorer). It's a little odd to see Microsoft do this -- they're typically not big on delivering patches to beta apps the way competitors like Google and Mozilla do. Perhaps there's a paradigm shift underway in Redmond.

If you're looking for some real IE9-related excitement, the recently-leaked Internet Explorer 9 beta 2 (which may, in fact, be an RC build) might be more up your alley. It's floating around the usual places you find 'community releases' of Microsoft apps.

7-Zip version 9.20 released, still the best tool for compressed files

7-Zip, compressed file manager7-Zip, one of the most active and mature open source projects, has just reached version 9.20. Work on Version 9 only begun last year, in 2009, but it's already far ahead of the old version (4.65) in terms of speed and functionality.

If you've never used 7-Zip before, now's the time to start. In one fell swoop it removes any need for other compressed file managers. It's faster and slimmer than WinZip, and lacks the nag screens of WinRar -- and it supports more file formats to boot! After installing, 7-Zip (or '7z') sits innocuously in your right-click context menu, ready to decompress almost every archive under the sun.

With version 9.20, you can even decompress some EXE, FLV and SWF files, peek inside NTFS, FAT and VHD files, and the command-line tool has been beefed up considerably. There's also localizations for Hindi, Gujarati, Sanskrit, Tatar, Uyghur and Kazakh, meaning there's more than 70 supported languages.

iPad, MacBook Air sell well on Black Friday

I visited an Apple Store last Friday, and the place was packed -- we had to wait just for a chance to enter the store and once inside, employees were frequently dipping into stacks of MacBook Airs and iPhones. My experience wasn't unique as Philip Elmer-DeWitt reports for Fortune.

Along with anecdotal evidence like mine, Piper Jaffray polled 100 Apple Stores by phone to come up with some real numbers. They found that Macs were selling at the rate of 8.2 units per hour per store, down from 8.3 last year. iPads were selling at 8.8 per hour. Gene Munster noted for Piper Jaffray that the iPad was gaining traction among demographics that typically avoid Macs, though specifics on those groups were not provided. Munster concluded by calling the iPad "the Mac of the masses," and it does seem to be becoming just that.

Additionally, the MacBook Air sold quite well on Friday, according to Chris Whitmore of Deutsche Bank. Whitmore polled 100 Apple Stores over the weekend as well as 50 third-party retailers selling Apple's goods. While he didn't provide any numbers, he did quote employees as calling the 11-inch Air a "customer favorite" that was "flying off the shelves."

Apple, ASUS top PCWorld satisfaction survey

Apple has garnered yet another win in a customer satisfaction survey -- this time it's PC World conferring the honors onto Cupertino, as Apple has topped both the laptop and desktop categories for most reliable and well-supported computer products. PC World says that Apple also did well in its smartphone category (with, of course, the iPhone), but that the antenna issues and a few other problems with the iPhone kept it from being listed at the top of the category. Still, PC World has nothing but praise for Apple, which is well-known both for solid, perfectly built hardware, and a software experience that rules out as many questions as possible.

This of course fits everything we've heard anecdotally about Apple in the past -- while of course there are sometimes issues from computer to computer or in certain experiences at the Apple Store, most of Apple's products are extremely reliable. Even when they're not, 9 times out of 10 we'll hear about Apple just outright replacing them for customers, under warranty or otherwise.

Asus also joined Apple at the top of the survey for both desktops and notebooks, and down at the bottom, PC World says that Dell and HP both show "troubling" figures for customer support. Both of those companies still saw increased earnings this past year, but problems in their customer support departments and cheaply made hardware have earned them reputations for trouble.

Jing, the all-in-one screen capture and recording tool from TechSmith, reviewed

TechSmith, with the launch of Snagit more than 20 years ago, is the definitive veteran of screen capture technology. Camtasia Studio, launched almost 10 years later, is now at version 7.1 and remains the best screen recording and video editing suite out there. TechSmith's latest tool, however, is an interesting mix of both Snagit and Camtasia. It's called Jing, and it makes sharing screenshots and screen recordings a total breeze.

Jing, at its most basic, lets you take perfect screenshots. You can drag a selection box around the target area, or let it snap to the current window. It's not as customizable as Snagit or Screenpresso, but it's definitely good enough.

When you probe a little deeper, however, Jing becomes a lot more interesting. Instead of taking a screenshot of a selected area or window, you can hit the 'Capture video' button and immediately start recording.

But it gets even better! Jing can automatically upload your screenshots and videos to TechSmith's Screencast.com site.

DARwIn-OP humanoid revealed, ready to open source your robotics program

The next version of the RoboCup-famous DARwIn bot is about ready to give the Nao a run for its money. The new DARwIn-OP from Robotis and Virginia Tech's RoMeLa (led by Dr. Dennis Hong, who joined us on the Engadget Show earlier this year) is just about to land, and the first pictures of the finished thing have started to circulate. While the bot is designed to perform, with sensors and servos suitable for higher-end robotics, the main thrust of the design is the open source and modular nature of the hardware and software. The bot can be purchased as a product from Robotis, but the CAD files are publicly available, and its plastic parts can be fabricated by the end user to save money (you do have a 3D printer, right?). Rumor has it the robot will retail for around $8,000, around half the cost of its closed source Nao competition. The full unveil of the robot is due at the IEEE-RAS International Conference on Humanoid Robots a couple weeks from now.

TeamViewer Beta 6 is now out, remote control freaks rejoice

teamviewer

Let me just come right out and say it: TeamViewer is the best remote control application for Windows PCs today. I've tried numerous apps, and nothing comes close to TeamViewer's performance on a WAN. For LAN situations, Windows Remote Desktop rocks. But when you've got the whole wide Internet between you and the computer you'd like to control, nothing beats TeamViewer. I use it several times per week, for extended sessions (hours on end), and it's always a joy to use. So yes, I'm a rabid fan, and I'm not ashamed.

And now, TeamViewer has announced a new beta for version 6. If you use TeamViewer 5, you'll notice the look and feel is different. But changes are more than skin-deep:

  • Custom QuickSupport is a feature that lets you connect to existing customers much more quickly, without getting their ID and password newly every time.
  • QuickJoin is a new feature that lets you send the session data to participants beforehand. This is great for presentations - the participants connect to your computer, and not vice versa. You no longer need to enter the data for each of the participants manually.
  • Reconnection after reboot makes sure TeamViewer will re-establish the connection even after the remote computer went down and came back up.

There are several other options; if you're not using TeamViewer yet, you really should start. But remember this is still a beta, so if you use it to control nuclear reactors or a personal army of killer robots, you may want to hold off on the upgrade.

PeerBlock 1.1 arrives with some important updates

PeerBlock is a great way to keep unwanted P2P connections (as well as advertising and spyware) from getting through to your Windows computer, and it's just gotten better with the release of PeerBlock 1.1.

Among the key additions are a completely revamped installer (complete with a signed driver), an updated list manager for easier settings tweaks, and a list verification feature to prevent file corruption. The signed driver is an important addition, since it makes the installation process much easier for users of 64-bit Windows. PeerBlock has also switched from the PeerGuardian blocklists to iBlocklist.com, which the developers say are much faster and more reliable. There's also an option to display allowed connections -- though you should expect an additional hit on your CPU if you switch it on.

Netflix launches $7.99 streaming-only plan, increases price of DVD plan

Netflix plansAfter a trial back in October, Netflix has now announced its $7.99/month streaming-only plan. This matches the Hulu Plus price drop from last week. Of course, both services have different libraries of TV shows and movies -- and Hulu Plus still has ads!

The new plan is targeted squarely at the growing army of those that find physical media a thing of the past. Still, a difference of just $2 is a small price to pay for the option of unlimited DVDs.

In other news, Netflix has increased the price of its DVD-loaning plans, presumably to cover the growth of its streaming service. One-DVD-at-a-time now costs a dollar more ($9.99), with larger plans increasing by a similar percentage.

The only-two-DVDs-a-month plan price remains unchanged.

Ubertwitter hits iPhone

Because we don't have enough Twitter clients for the iPhone, ÜberTwitter is now available for the device. It's been extremely popular for BlackBerry users for some time, and now iPhone users can get a taste of that ÜberTwitter goodness. It offers the features you'd expect, like direct messages, retweeting, link shortening, etc.

What's new is what they're calling "ÜberView," which lets you view information shared in a tweet, like a link or a photo, without leaving the app or opening a new window. To try it out, either tap the link or tilt the iPhone on its side. That forces a new pane to open next to the stream of tweets.

If you try it out, be sure to send the team some feedback via the built-in feedback button. ÜberTwitter may be the latest Twitter client for iOS, but we're sure it won't be the last.

Luke, I am your smartphone (video)

NTT DoCoMo recently launched the Samsung Galaxy S in the Japanese market and now we've come to discover that it's chosen a very forceful personality to represent the product to its discerning audience. Darth "roundabound" Vader has been starring in the carrier's latest round of "always with you" ads, wherein he serves as a (sort of) human representation of the phone, thus lending some anthropomorphic qualities to the cold slab of technology awaiting you in the shops. This whole outlandish idea really shouldn't work, but somehow it does -- we want a little Vader in our lives too now. Video after the break.

iPad keyboard has broken shift-drag capitalization under iOS 4.2.1

The iOS 4.2.1 update for my iPad brought many welcome features -- and one unwelcome one. Since upgrading, I have found myself unable to use the handy shift-drag trick to type capitals. Now, I move my finger down to shift, place it on the screen, drag to the letter I want, release it -- and get something random. Rarely, it's the character I was aiming for. More often, it's some other character I dragged my finger over on the way to it. Even more often, it's something nothing at all.

The video shows the problem in action. This is really quite annoying -- I failed to log into a server several times this morning, and it wasn't until I watched the password box like a hawk that I could deduce why. Fix it please, Apple!

Thanks to Jon for sending this in

Auto HD for YouTube lets you pre-set Chrome for 720p in YouTube

autohdforyoutube

Auto HD for YouTube is a fairly simple Chrome add-on, which has a similar function to the many Greasemonkey scripts that do the same thing: it makes YouTube default to high-quality playback. I've tried it out, and here are some quick thoughts:

  • No auto buffering: Sadly, this add-on doesn't change YouTube's default behavior, which is to just start playing the video rather than buffer and wait for you to hit Play. So if you have a slow connection and still wish to enjoy HD, you might be better off with the Greasemonkey script called YouTube Auto Buffer & Auto HD & Remove Ads.
  • Doesn't work well with channels: I've tried it out with the Pomplamoose video channel, and it just wouldn't work. The video played at 480p. Only when I clicked through to an individual video page did the add-on kick in.
  • Handy options: You can have the player auto-widen, and you can set four different quality settings: "Preferred," "Secondary," "Fallback," and even "Secondary fallback." I must say, "Secondary fallback" sounds like a bit of an overkill to me, but it's available.

All in all, it does work. If you'd rather use native Chrome add-ons than Greasemonkey scripts, try it on for size.
